General Manager

Crosscutting Concepts is a hands-on science education company that develops, manufactures, and markets innovative products for high school and post-secondary education. Crosscutting Concepts is best known for the Mystery of Lyle and Louise series. The Mystery of Lyle and Louise is the premier curriculum for forensic science designed for high school and introductory undergraduate education. Comprised of independent hands-on laboratory kits, Lyle and Louise introduces students to a broad range of techniques in forensic analysis, including DNA Typing, Questioned Document Examination, Forensic Entomology, Bite Mark Analysis, Blood Spatter Analysis, Hair and Fiber Analysis, and more.

General Manager Role

Crosscutting Concepts seeks an entrepreneurial general manager to oversee daily business operations and manage a team of four. This is an opportunity to be a “CEO-in-training” and to earn a substantial equity stake in a small company. Initially the role is primarily concerned with production and quality but we hope that will grow towards sales and marketing as well as new product development. The company has active founders and directors that will support this position.


While responsibilities in this position will change and grow over time, you can expect to:

  • Schedule team members and prioritize production tasks.
  • Manage relationships with distributors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Identify the need for corrective actions, and implement them.
  • Develop and implement process improvement projects.
  • Ensure shipped products meet quality requirements.
  • Recruit and hire talent.
  • Provide training and support to new hires.
  • Provide coaching and performance feedback to all team members.
  • Evaluate overall team and individual performance and delivering the performance reviews.
  • Communicate and ensure understanding of goals with team members.
  • Monitor individual and team metrics and performance versus targets.
  • Provide reports on productivity and other performance indicators to board of directors.

Experience and Skills

  • You are an experienced manager of people, and know how to coach and motivate team members. 3+ years of experience managing people is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to use those in verbal interactions as well as in written form.
  • You can get a lot done with limited resources; not afraid to roll up your sleeves.
  • You know how to interview and hire.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative field (Mathematics, Statistics, Business, Economics, Marketing.) (Master’s preferred) or comparable
  • Experience or interest in science and/or education is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Will be required to lift up to fifty pounds during the course of a workday.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively to ensure the safety of employees.
  • Will require bending, stooping, and occasional use of a ladder.

  • This position is ideally full-time but could be a flexible arrangement with the right candidate. Compensation will be salary based on experience and qualifications (full-time would be $40-60k), performance-based cash bonus, and a vested equity position in the company.
