Bad Impression™ Bite Marks Analysis

During the car crash investigation, John Wayne Gretsky presented a bite mark on his arm as an alibi, claiming he was bitten in a bar fight. Your students must determine if he was bitten by a bar patron, or maybe by a victim of the car crash!
Description

During the car crash investigation, John Wayne Gretsky presented a bite mark on his arm as an alibi, claiming he was bitten in a bar fight. Your students must determine if he was bitten by a bar patron, or maybe by a victim of the car crash!

After learning about forensic odontology, students will take casts of their own teeth in wax and identify their teeth. They will then develop their own personal set of objective criteria for bite marks analysis. With these criteria, they will attempt to determine if the bite mark in a photo of John Wayne's arm could have been made by any of the wax casts they have to compare, including a cast from the car crash victim.

As in all Lyle and Louise modules, this kit is geared to high school and undergraduate courses, and is matched to National Science Education Standards. This kit is designed for 6 labs groups (up to 30 students).

Next Generation Science Standards

  • MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
  • HS-ETS1-2. Design a solution to a complex real-world problem by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable problems that can be solved through engineering.

Common Core Standards

  • CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.
  • CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
  • CCSS.Math.Content.HSN-Q.A.3 Choose a level of accuracy appropriate to limitations on measurement when reporting quantities.
